Wayne Gallasch

Wayne Gallasch – (1961 – 1968) boarder and daybug in Burgman and Blaxland Houses. At school, sport took priority over studies. Moved to Sydney in 1969 to work in the government. Swimming member of Bondi Icebergs for 14 years. Member of North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club for 14 years. Played Aussie Rules with East Sydney for 4 years (got too old). Married Lisa and moved back to Canberra in 1982 due to father’s ill health. Have 2 sons, Alex, a qualified carpenter and Charles, in year 12.

School memories – where to start? Frankie Diala and myself being pursued by an irate Fred Fage with him throwing javelins at us (still unsure why!); participating in first ever undefeated 1st XV; waking up one night on returning to school to hear Mr Peel, on finding a runaway girl in bed with an unnamed pupil, to report to him when he was finished; expelled from both Girls and Boys Grammar schools on last day (Bruce Tier knows why) and; meeting so many great blokes over the years there.

(Editor’s note: Several people have identified the unnamed pupil with the runaway girl, but we think it best not to name him here!)

    Wayne,
I remember Fred doing the same with Chick Harvey. He threw the javelin and it missed Chick’s head by inches. We were all stunned. (Maybe I witnessed your incident. Hard to be a reliable witness when you’re an old alcoholic). Couldn’t do that when I was a teacher. What about Mr Moore the weightlifting teacher? Anyone want to say anything about him?
